The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey under a lease with the City of New York have been operating LaGuardia Airport (LGA) since June 1, 1947. LaGuardia International Airport (LGA) is located in Queens, New York. It is about eight miles to Midtown Manhattan. The airport covers around 680 acres boasting 72 aircraft gates. Right on the river, the airport is 12.7 feet above sea level. Named after Fiorello LaGuardia, the former mayor of New York, LaGuardia International Airport is the smallest of the New York City three major commercial airports (JFK - John F Kennedy International Airport and EWR - Newark Liberty International Airport are the others). Most of the air traffic handled at LaGuardia Airport is domestic flights with a few international vacations flights as well.
